President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured citizens that the election date will be revealed shortly.

According to SABC News, political parties gearing up for this year’s national and provincial elections are calling on Ramaphosa to use his State of the Nation Address next month to disclose the date.

Over 360 political parties are expressing interest in contesting the elections. Anticipation has been building for what many believe will be hotly contested elections since the dawn of democracy.

Earlier this year, the President stated that he consulted with the IEC* regarding the elections, which must be held within 90 days.

Ramaphosa emphasised, “Well, the election date will be announced shortly so that South Africans should get ready for the election. This is an election year; we are bringing an end to the sixth administration and once the people of our country have decided who they would like to take their country forward in the form of a new government, we enter into the seventh administration, so the election date is going to be announced soon. Does soon mean the SONA? No, the election date is going to be announced soon.”

Meanwhile, gearing up for the elections, the final voter registration is scheduled for this weekend, the 3rd and 4th of February.

In urging all eligible voters to register, the government and the IEC aim to ensure optimal registration numbers for the upcoming provincial and national elections. The IEC has committed to delivering a better registration weekend than the one held in November last year.
