The City of Ekurhuleni advises the public to remain cautious regarding water consumption practices.

Despite no reported cholera cases since February, the city urges residents to handle water and other liquids for consumption with continued vigilance.

This comes in response to the National Department of Health’s appeal, as the cholera death toll rises, claiming the lives of at least 47 people nationwide.

In light of the warning to affected areas and growing demands from unions and civil society for urgent action, Zweli Dlamini, the city’s spokesperson, assures that Ekurhuleni’s outbreak response teams remain on high alert. Plans are underway to enhance health education and promotion, empowering communities and schools ahead of the third term’s reopening.

The public is strongly advised to avoid known or suspected contaminated food, water, and surfaces. Proper handwashing with soap before handling food or after using the bathroom is crucial to prevent potential infection.

Furthermore, individuals are urged to refrain from drinking water from unsafe sources like rivers, dams, and streams unless it has been boiled or disinfected. This precautionary measure aims to ensure water safety amidst the ongoing cholera concerns.
