The City of Ekurhuleni has announced that waste removal services will continue as usual during the festive season, with the exception of Christmas Day. According to a recent statement from the city, any areas scheduled for waste collection on December 25 will instead receive service on December 26. Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that this adjustment will be the only change to the regular schedule, assuring residents that services will proceed normally on all other days, including New Year’s Day.

Dlamini also addressed the common festive practice of giving ‘Christmas boxes’ or gifts to waste collectors, reminding residents that this is against council policy. He explained that while the gesture is well-intentioned, it has previously led to negative consequences. “There have been instances where residents faced abusive behavior from workers when they opted not to give gifts. Such incidents disrupt service delivery,” Dlamini stated. He emphasized that waste collectors and officials are instructed not to solicit any gifts from the public during their duty, as they are adequately compensated for their work by the city.

Residents who encounter any disruptions in waste removal services are advised to report these issues to the City of Ekurhuleni Call Centre at 0860 54 3000. The city aims to ensure uninterrupted and efficient waste management throughout the holiday season, while also maintaining the integrity and professionalism of its services.
