Another Senior EFF Member Resigns Amid Declining Support and Election Setbacks

South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party faces yet another setback as two prominent members resign amidst declining electoral support.

The party announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a founding member, former spokesperson, and close ally of EFF leader Julius Malema, had stepped down from his parliamentary position. Alongside him, Yazini Tetyana, another EFF lawmaker, also resigned.

The EFF statement expressed gratitude to both members for their contributions and wished them well in their future endeavors. However, no specific reasons were provided for their departures.

Election Declines and Political Fallout

These resignations come after a tough year for the EFF, which saw its support drop from 10.8% in 2019 to 9.5% in the 2024 general election. This decline cost the party five parliamentary seats, marking a significant blow to its standing as a leading voice on the South African left.

The EFF, known for its radical policies advocating the nationalisation of mines and banks, has struggled to maintain its appeal. Analysts attribute this to voter discontent with the party’s rhetoric and perceived lack of actionable progress.

Adding to the turbulence, several prominent EFF stalwarts, including its former deputy leader, defected to join the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP). Founded by former President Jacob Zuma, the MKP displaced the EFF as South Africa’s third-largest political group in the 2024 elections.

Impact on the EFF’s Future

The loss of key figures like Ndlozi could weaken the party’s internal structure and messaging ahead of the next election cycle. Known for his charisma and sharp communication skills, Ndlozi played a pivotal role in shaping the EFF’s public image during its formative years.

The dual resignation also raises questions about the EFF’s ability to retain its top talent and address internal challenges.

What Lies Ahead for the EFF?

The resignations of Ndlozi and Tetyana underscore the broader challenges facing the EFF as it seeks to recover from its electoral slump. With the 2026 municipal elections approaching, the party must rebuild its base, address internal divisions, and clarify its policy direction to regain voter trust.

For now, the spotlight remains on Julius Malema and the party leadership to steer the EFF through this turbulent period.
