Community Leader Hosts Festival for Youth in Eersterust

Colleen Jacobs, a long-time resident of Eersterust for over 40 years, recently organized a heritage festival that welcomed over 1,000 children from the area. Known as the “aunty of Eersterust,” Jacobs has been spearheading this event for 26 years, emphasizing the importance of supporting the youth in her community.

Expressing her commitment, Jacobs stated, “Not a lot of people are taking note of the kids in this area and we have to challenge that.” She emphasized the significance of making every child feel special and acknowledged the positive impact it has on their well-being.

The festival took place on Heritage Day last month at Bloekomboom, Eersterust Ext 6, with plans in motion to host a Christmas party for the children this December. The event, supported by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Art & Recreation, featured activities such as art lessons, modeling, dancing, and soccer.

This year marked the first time the festival was held in a park, creating a vibrant space for children to showcase their talents. Sponsors generously provided food for the attendees, enhancing the overall experience for the participants.

Recognizing the potential within each child, Jacobs highlighted the importance of offering special attention to nurture their abilities and boost their self-esteem. Community member Floyd Sehola praised Jacobs for her dedication, describing her as an inspiring leader who unites the community and fosters a sense of belonging among residents.
