DJ Maphorisa arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend

Authorities arrested DJ Maphorisa, also known as Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, a prominent Amapiano producer and club DJ, on Sunday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, actress and fellow DJ, Thuli Phongolo. According to Phongolo’s statement, the gender-based violence occurred at her apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg, where they were both residing. Phongolo had confronted Maphorisa about their previous night’s argument at a gig where they were both performing. Still, the reason for the dispute is unknown, as reported by City Press.

Phongolo told the police that when she confronted Maphorisa, he became aggressive and slapped her face. He then continued to punch her in the chest and took her to the balcony, where he grabbed her aggressively by the neck and hit her with his elbow. Phongolo’s statement revealed severe bruises on her neck, chest, arms, and right cheek.

The actress and DJ phone her manager. They then went to the police station to open a domestic violence case against Maphorisa. According to the police, they noticed Phongolo sustained severe injuries after seeing her walk into the station.

Sources suggest that the two have been having severe problems in their relationship, with previous heated arguments that never resulted in a police report. Furthermore, the incident was not the first time DJ Maphorisa and Phongolo had a heated dispute.

Maphorisa will appear today in court on Monday on charges of assault. He has requested to call his lawyers while in police holding cells to negotiate a police bail.
