The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has accomplished a significant and transformative project that goes beyond just upgrading road infrastructure; it has revitalised the sense of pride and connectivity in Diepsloot ext 5 and 6. This achievement benefits residents and motorists and underscores a broader commitment to enhancing municipal road quality in Region A as reported by Joburg Newsroom.

This ambitious project, initiated in 2021 and successfully concluded on July 1, 2022, saw an allocation of approximately R23.4 million to address various challenges in Diepsloot. These challenges encompassed the transition from gravel roads to the resurfacing of roads with durable asphalt, the construction of vital side walkways, paving, the implementation of underground stormwater infrastructure, and associated improvements.
Jeff Maluleke, the JRA Project Manager overseeing the area, underscores the project’s significance, emphasising that it represents ongoing efforts to meticulously plan, design, construct, and maintain roads and road infrastructure. He anticipates that these enhancements will bring tangible benefits to the lives of residents, such as improved mobility, heightened road safety, and better access to essential services.
A key highlight of this endeavour is the upgrade of roads like Liberty Street, Orange Street, Hastings Ndlovu Street, and several others, totalling 1.78 kilometres, with the application of asphalt surfaces. Simultaneously, the project included the construction of 1.3 kilometres of stormwater infrastructure to mitigate future flooding risks.
At its core, the primary objective of the project was to elevate the quality of roadways within the Diepsloot community, making them more accessible, safer, and, overall, more conducive to a better quality of life.
Ward 113 Councillor Abraham Mabuke expresses his gratitude for the completed road upgrade and its profound impact on the community. He highlights that residents can now confidently use the sidewalks without having to contend with motor vehicles, significantly reducing accidents in the area.
“This upgrade is a clear example of how changes in infrastructure can positively impact the community. The completion of this project has had a profound impact on service delivery in Johannesburg,” remarks Councillor Mabuke.
The community has warmly embraced the project’s completion, with many expressing appreciation for the attention and improvements their neighbourhood has received. Beyond these visible benefits, the project has also created employment opportunities for local small businesses and candidates from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This dual achievement addresses economic and social challenges, further solidifying the project’s positive influence on the community and its stakeholders.
The completion of this transformative project in Diepsloot ext 5 and 6 stands as a testament to the commitment of the JRA to enhance infrastructure, elevate the quality of life for residents, and generate socio-economic opportunities within the region.
