A detective constable has been arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice

A detective constable has been arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice. According to IOL, the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit arrested him after attempting to release Zimbabwean businessman Frank Buyanga from prison.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the detective nearly released the imprisoned Buyanga from Johannesburg Correctional Services, claiming he needed to investigate. However, the Hawks later discovered that the detective had no connection to the Buyanga case and subsequently arrested him.

Mogale stated that the detective’s arrest links to a case of fraud and infringement of the Immigration Act against Buyanga. Buyanga was charged on 28 November 2022 and refused bail because he faced accusations of kidnapping in his country of origin.

On Friday last week, the investigation officer received a call from Johannesburg Correctional Services alerting him to another police officer, a constable, who wished to release Buyanga for an investigation. The investigating officer requested that the prison warders delay the detective constable, and he and his colleagues arrived to question him.

The investigating officer later discovered that the detective had no link to the Buyanga case, and Hawks immediately arrested him. Police had caught and detained Buyanga at an upmarket hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, in November. Zimbabwean authorities want Buyanga on charges of kidnapping, robbery and contempt of court.

The charges stemmed from an incident in April 2020 in Zimbabwe, where Buyanga kidnapped his next of kin and fled to South Africa. Zimbabwean authorities immediately issued a warrant of arrest, and Interpol Harare gave a red notice.

The South African Police Service noted that Buyanga’s charges were related to a child custody battle with his former girlfriend, Chantelle Muteswa, with whom he reportedly left Zimbabwe illegally.
