According to Khume Ramulifho, the DA’s Basic Education Spokesperson in Gauteng, schools in the region are facing a severe safety crisis with both learners and teachers being under siege as reported by IOL.

Alarming statistics reveal 40 stabbings, 10 shootings, and 16 violent crimes involving learners and teachers, including eight learners and a principal who tragically lost their lives on school premises over the past five years.

Gangsterism was responsible for 26 of these incidents, emphasizing the need for a review of the current school safety strategy and involving all stakeholders in developing new measures to curb school violence.

The DA has also called for collaboration between Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, and MEC for Community Safety and Security, Faith Mazibuko, to prioritize school safety and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
