DA called for action concerning the water outages

Councillor Nicole van Dyk and the DA called for action concerning the water outages in Johannesburg.

As the city’s water crisis worsens, the DA in Johannesburg demands strong accountability and immediate action from Rand Water and Premier Panayaza Lesufi.

This crisis has left countless Johannesburg residents without access to water, with some communities enduring dry taps for weeks and resorting to public protests. Recently, the phrase “water-shifting” has been frequently used by Rand Water, Joburg Water, and the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu. However, this terminology appears to be more of a concerning trend of blame-shifting rather than a genuine effort to address the urgent needs of the affected communities.

In the previous month, DA councillors in Johannesburg published an open letter to the mayor outlining crucial demands to mitigate the water crisis. Unfortunately, the response to this letter has centred around allegations of prioritising privileged residents, a claim that DA councillors vehemently denied.

The city’s approach seems more about politicising the water issue rather than taking concrete measures to address it. The DA is dedicated to representing all residents of the city.

In an extensive effort to address the crisis comprehensively, DA councillors have taken additional steps to organise meetings with Joburg Water, aiming to provide residents with more information and answers regarding the ongoing water issues. These efforts are directed towards understanding the reasons behind the water shortages and when residents can expect water restoration.

Councillors have partnered with the private sector to sponsor much-needed water for residents. Furthermore, they’ve collaborated with counterparts in the Provincial Legislature and the National Assembly to embark on a Water Crisis Tour to communities like Claremont, Bruma, and Midrand, which have struggled with water shortages, intending to gain deeper insights into their challenges.

The DA remains unwavering in its commitment to fight for residents’ fundamental access to water and the dignity of all Johannesburg residents. The party will persistently work to uphold the basic human right to clean water.

DA councillors are urging Minister Senzo Mchunu, Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda to embrace their leadership roles fully and prioritise the fundamental human right to access clean water for all.
