The Pretoria magistrate’s court has deferred the case against Joseph Alexander (37), the estranged husband of radiologist Roshan George, until January 29. The postponement allows the court to verify the accused’s information for bail purposes. Alexander faces charges of kidnapping his wife and conspiracy to commit murder. He remained in custody after his arrest over the weekend. The incident occurred at Cedar Junction family resort. She was safely rescued thanks to the SAPS anti-kidnapping task team, crime intelligence officers, detectives, and private security.

It was believed that the couple was in the process of a divorce. The radiologist was abducted on Saturday. Law enforcement swiftly responded. Alexander, also a doctor, was arrested. Police have launched a search for four persons of interest believed to be involved in the abduction.

There has been an increase in kidnappings. 3,641 cases were registered from April to June 2023. Gauteng has the highest number of abductions, with KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga following. The Institute for Security Studies notes that this crime is four times higher than a decade ago. The motives for most kidnappings, as analysed by the SAPS crime registrar’s office, include incidents during car or truck hijackings, armed robberies at various locations, and the main motive often involves stealing cash through mobile banking applications or delaying victims from raising alarms during robberies.
