Muldersdrift’s Ouma Corrie Marks Remarkable 102nd Birthday
Recently marking her 102nd birthday on July 26, Corrie van Lelyveld stands as a beacon of wisdom, eager to share her insights with young women navigating their paths amidst challenges and uncertainties. Born on July 26, 1921, her life’s tapestry is woven with the threads of history, having witnessed the shadows and triumphs of World War II, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and South Africa’s transformation from an apartheid state to a democratic and inclusive nation.

Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, was the backdrop to Corrie’s upbringing, where she was the eldest of seven siblings. In a household led by a hardworking construction worker father and a nurturing stay-at-home mother, she learned the values of humility and diligence. Rooted in her faith, Corrie attributes her long and purposeful life journey to her upbringing in a devout Christian home. Her father’s teachings echoed in her memory as he instilled in her and her siblings the importance of unwavering faith through Bible readings and prayers.
“I grew up in a Christian home, and I was the eldest daughter. Every evening after supper, we would pray and read the Bible. It was a pivotal aspect of my upbringing. I remember my father’s insistence on reciting a Bible passage after each prayer session. Even today, I continue my morning prayers, staying connected to God. My Bible holds immense significance to me.”
As Women’s Month celebrations extend throughout August, Corrie is driven to share the secrets of her longevity and her beliefs on the attributes of a strong woman.
“Being a woman entails a multifaceted role, encompassing both motherly and fatherly responsibilities. Striking a balance between sternness and compassion becomes a challenge. However, we are not meant to shoulder these responsibilities alone. My counsel to young women is to discover their own path and embrace life fully. Cultivating a healthy lifestyle and nurturing one’s loved ones are paramount.”
Within her family circle, Ouma Corrie is a cherished and esteemed figure. Her granddaughter, Denise Jonker, showers her with admiration and gratitude for the profound impact she has had.

Her daughter and son-in-law, Alta and Alister Dewar, further illuminate Corrie’s qualities.
