Convicted Police Murderer Receives 20-Year Prison Sentence

Mzo Ntombela (27) has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Durban High Court for the murder of Cpt Zwelakhe Ntombela (50), an officer with the Durban Metro Police.

Tragedy struck on May 3, 2023, when Cpt Ntombela was fatally shot as he arrived at his residence in Umlazi. Alongside the loss of his life, he was also robbed of his personal and service pistols, compounding the gravity of the crime.

The Umlazi police station received the report of this murder and entrusted the case to the Hawks, a division of Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation, for a thorough investigation.

Following diligent efforts, the Hawks, in collaboration with the National Intervention Unit, apprehended Mzo Ntombela in July. His arrest was made in the Umsinga area, where he had been concealing himself. Additionally, Cpt Ntombela’s firearms were discovered at the accused’s residence in KwaMaphumulo, serving as crucial evidence in the case.

Maj Gen Lesetja Senona, the KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation provincial head, lauded the outcome of the case. He expressed appreciation for the officers’ meticulous work in compiling a well-investigated case docket that was presented in court.

Senona also conveyed a resolute message: the Hawks remain unwavering in their commitment to addressing cases involving the killing of police officers in the province. He commended the promptness and effectiveness of the investigation, noting that Mzo Ntombela’s arrest and subsequent conviction were achieved within a mere three months of the incident.

In essence, this case underscores the dedication of law enforcement in pursuing justice. Mzo Ntombela’s conviction and sentencing serve as a testament to the concerted efforts of investigative teams in upholding the law and ensuring accountability for such heinous crimes.
