Mulbarton Plagued by Persistent Water Leakage Woes

constant water leakage in Mulbarton

The constant water leakage in Mulbarton frustrates residents, impacting the neighbourhood’s appearance and safety. Local authorities have taken note of the problem, with Ward Clr Tyrell Meyers meeting with the Comaro Chronicle on July 27 to discuss the matter. The root cause of the issue lies in a faulty hydrant and valve located at the corner of Kirby Bella Road and Bellairs Drive.

Attempts by Joburg Water to address the problem by removing the hydrant and valve and converting it into a straight pipe have resulted in an unintended consequence – continuous water gushing, wasting valuable resources and posing safety threats to nearby infrastructure, including fibre networks. Moreover, the subpar quality has left a dangerous hole, posing a hazard to motorists and causing a bottleneck as it reduces a two-lane road to a single lane.

In addition, Joburg Water left four other holes in the area unattended, exacerbating the issue. Despite residents’ complaints, they seem to have fallen on deaf ears, leaving them feeling ignored by the current administration and government.

Meyers expressed deep concern about the situation, highlighting the impact on residents and the ward. Given Johannesburg’s level 1 water restrictions, the ongoing leakage has become a more pressing concern. Despite efforts to escalate the matter and seek intervention from relevant authorities, no action has been taken.

In response to the urgent need to address the water leakage, Meyers called the MMC and the executive mayor to take immediate action. He stressed the importance of proper quality and the necessity of replacing ageing pipes, which he believes to be the root cause of the recurring issue.

The continuous water leakage mars the neighbourhood’s appearance and hinders the community’s efforts to beautify the area and maintain high standards. Road reinstatements and other beautification projects are put on hold until the underlying problem is resolved.

Residents of Mulbarton now hope that the authorities will take decisive action to address the issue, allowing their ward to flourish in a safe and beautiful environment. The Comaro Chronicle has made numerous attempts to reach Johannesburg Water for comment, but there has been no response yet.
