Many are offering condolences for the family of Dwayne Gordon as community members grapple with the shock of a shooting at a place of worship that resulted in the tragic death of a clergyman and the injury of three others.

On Friday night, Pastor Dwayne Gordon was shot while delivering a sermon at the Eagle Christian Centre in Newlands, Johannesburg. The Randfontein Herald reports that it is believed a group of men stormed into the church and opened fire, killing Gordon, who hailed from Toekomsrus in Randfontein, and leaving three others injured.

A live stream captured the horrifying incident on social media, where the sounds of screams pierced the air.

The Eagle Christian Centre issued a statement on its Facebook page. During this trying time, it expressed its devastation and extended heartfelt condolences to Gordon’s family and friends. The church is collaborating with law enforcement authorities to ensure the arrests of the perpetrators. There will also be additional security measures to safeguard the congregation in future.

People shared their genuine condolences on social media. Jeandre Davids wrote, “No words can describe the pain my heart is feeling right now. I miss you already so much. May your beautiful soul rest in perfect peace. I love you so much.” Prophet Anointed Benard paid tribute, saying, “You were a great servant of God, prophet Dwayne Gordon, such a humble soul you were. I’m deeply hurt by your passing. I pray that God strengthens your family and friends in this difficult time.”

In an article published by the Northcliff Melville Times, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi revealed that the armed men robbed people of their cellphones and other belongings before fleeing the scene. A case of murder and two counts of attempted murder have been opened, according to Nevhuhulwi.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela condemned the incident and urged the community to cooperate with the police to address the area’s crime.

At the time of publishing, there have been no arrests.
