Rail Commuters in Pretoria Forced to Seek Alternative Transport After Derailment
In an unexpected turn of events, Metrorail has urged commuters in Pretoria to seek alternative transport as train services grind to a halt during Wednesday’s morning peak. According to SABC News, the disruption comes in the wake of a goods train derailment at Hercules in the early hours of the day.
As a result of the derailment, train services along the Mabopane and De Wildt lines have been suspended until further notice. Technical teams are diligently working to clear the accident scene, ensuring the safe passage of trains once operations resume.

Lillian Mofokeng, spokesperson for Gauteng’s Metrorail, expressed regret over the inconvenience the suspension is causing commuters. She stated, “Metrorail train services operating between Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa to Pretoria are temporarily suspended due to a goods train that derailed at Hercules in the early hours of this [Wednesday] morning. As a result, trains will not operate at all during this morning peak. Metrorail apologises for the inconvenience this will cause.”
