Collaborative Project in Pretoria Focuses on Water Security and Reconnecting Residents to Nature

A collaborative project centered around water security and reestablishing connections between residents of Pretoria and water, as well as nature, is currently gaining traction. The endeavor encompasses several key components:

– **Water-Themed Photography Competition:** The project features a water-themed photography competition that is nearing its conclusion.
– **Upcoming Workshops:** Workshops are set to be conducted as part of the project.
– **Research Initiatives:** Ongoing research efforts are aimed at enhancing water awareness and promoting sustainable water usage practices.

Key Figures Involved in the Project

The collaborative effort involves the participation of University of Pretoria researchers, staff members from Tshwane, and a researcher from Austria, Kathy Berger, who shared her insights on the project:

“I am passionate about sustainable development and collaboration. Through our research in Tshwane, I’ve noticed a generational shift in how people interact with water and green spaces.”

Research Findings and Objectives

Berger expressed concerns regarding the outcomes of their research, highlighting gaps in collaboration between the metro and residents on water-related issues. Furthermore, the research unveiled that persistent sewage leaks and waste are contaminating city rivers, leading to a shift in their utilization from recreational and cultural activities to dumping sites or being altogether avoided.

Future Plans and Initiatives

The ongoing research project, named CONSUS, is scheduled to continue until 2027, with a strong focus on collaboration with the city to implement recommendations. Berger emphasized the necessity for collective actions to preserve Tshwane’s water security and stressed the importance of fostering robust relationships between residents and city officials regarding water-related matters.

The project includes the following upcoming events:

– **Wonders of Water Photography Competition:** Closing on October 11.
– **Workshops:** Scheduled for October 24 at Mabopane Green River Corridor, Tshwane South TVET College and October 26 at Magnolia Dell’s Huckleberry’s Restaurant.

Community Engagement and Funding

The project, undertaken in collaboration with the City of Aarhus in Denmark, the University of Pretoria, and the University of Aarhus, aims to promote sustainable development through community engagement and art. It is financially supported by the Danida Fellowship Centre and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

Following the photography competition, workshops will provide stakeholders and the public with a platform to envision a future where water is safe and accessible to all residents in Tshwane.
