COJ's Effort to Remove Apartheid Legacy Renaming William Nicol Drive

The City of Johannesburg has officially renamed William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive as part of its ongoing mission to eradicate the legacy of apartheid. This change took effect on Tuesday, transforming the four-kilometre road in Sandton with a new name, as reported by Eyewitness News.

William Nicol, the previous namesake of the road, was the second chairperson of the Afrikaner Broederbond, a white nationalist organisation historically credited with formulating apartheid policies.

The initiative to rename William Nicol Drive to honour freedom fighter Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was set in motion five years ago by Loyiso Masuku, an African National Congress (ANC) councillor who currently serves as the MMC of Group Corporate and Shared Services. Masuku expressed that this renaming was long overdue and a significant step.

“We are renaming it to show that names carry meaning, names have a heritage in our space, but those who fought for us like Mama Winnie – we are immortalising her, and we are removing those who were the architects of apartheid,” Masuku stated.

The renaming coincided with what would have been Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s 87th birthday, further honouring her legacy and contributions to the struggle for freedom and justice.
