Clean-up Organisation Earns Recognition
In October, the North of the Mountain branch of AfriForum, a prominent clean-up organisation in South Africa, received recognition as the best AfriForum branch in the country. The branch’s chairperson, Quentin Meyer, accepted the award. He expressed his vision of investing in community work for Pretoria North. The organisation, dedicated to sustainable cleaning projects, covered a total distance of 760km in October to complete various initiatives in the area. Among the projects were sustainable cleaning efforts in Delia Street, André Street, the corner of Azalea Road and Bokmakierie Street, and locations like the Pretoria North city hall and Heldeakker Cemetery.

The AfriForum branch, named North of the Mountain, extends its cleaning efforts to numerous parks, including Monumentpoort, Wolmer, Suur Klapper, Hasie, Tsessebe, Dolfyn, Hippo, and the park on Bokser Street. The organisation’s commitment is evident as they picked up 2,383 refuse bags of rubbish, removed 67 loads, and cleared approximately 12 hectares of overgrown grass. Additionally, the team repaired 30 potholes and collaborated in fixing potholes in Doornpoort. Sampie Steinberg, the AfriForum district coordinator for Greater Pretoria North, commended the team’s hard work, emphasising that they send a clear message about taking proactive measures to combat urban decay.
Looking ahead, Meyer shared his dream of establishing a movement to restore Pretoria North to its former glory, a vision that took shape in 2022 when the AfriForum Noord van die Berg branch was established. Meyer expressed gratitude to friends, family, and the people of Pretoria North for making his dream a reality. He also acknowledged the dedication of his garden team, including members Ebby, Alfred, Jabu, and Terence, thanking them for being the backbone of the group.
