City urges pensioners to re-apply for property rate rebates

The City of Johannesburg has given pensioners, who own residential properties, until September 30 to apply or re-apply for pensioner rebates benefits, as the City urges pensioners to re-apply for property rate rebates. Current benefits will lapse on June 30. Pensioners stand to gain financially on the recently approved property rates, which saw the City approving only a 2% increase in the property rates. The implementation of the new tariffs will be on July 1.

According to Kgamanyane Maphologela, the Director of Customer Communications in the City’s Group Finance Department, all applications for rebates received by September 30 will be backdated to July 1, ensuring that eligible pensioners do not miss out on the benefits they are entitled to.

The City of Johannesburg has also approved property rebates for different categories of pensioners, aiming to provide relief for those with financial difficulties. The following are the categories of rebates available for pensioners:

Pensioners between the ages of 60 and 69:

    • Gross monthly household income is lower than R11,904, and property value is up to R1.5 million (including the residential threshold value).
    • Qualify for a 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R1.5 million (including the residential threshold value). Rates will be according to the remaining market value exceeding R1.5 million.
    • Gross monthly household income between R11,904.01 and R20,404, and property value up to R1.5 million (inclusive of the residential threshold value) for pensioners from the age of 60.
    • Qualify for a 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R1.5 million (including the residential threshold value). Rates will be according to the remaining market value exceeding R1.5 million.

Pensioners aged 70 and above:

    • Income levels are not considered.
    • Qualify for a 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R2 million (inclusive of the residential threshold value). Rates will be according to the remaining market value exceeding R2 million.

Pensioners who wish to apply for these rebates must submit certain documents as part of the application process. These documents include a certified copy of their ID, three-month bank statements, proof of income, a SASSA card copy (certified back and front), and a SARS income tax certificate.

To facilitate the application process, pensioners can submit their completed applications with supporting documentation via email to [email protected] or [email protected].
