Joburg City Power Makes Headway on Burnt M1 Cable, Full Restoration Still Pending

Joburg City Power faces hurdles restoring electricity to areas hit by a fire caused by a burnt M1 cable. IOL reports that the incident caused widespread outages in Parktown, Braamfontein, Newtown, and the Joburg CBD. Initial efforts to restore power via alternative substations proved impractical, with a shortage of generators exacerbating the challenge. Despite ongoing debris clearance along the M1, complete restoration isn’t imminent.

After assessing the damage, City Power prioritises tunnel cleanup to gauge restoration time accurately. While committed to quick rehabilitation, the process will take time, prompting apologies for the inconvenience. During inspections, evidence of criminal activity emerged, hinting at cable theft as the fire’s cause. About 300 meters of copper cable were stolen, and tools used for theft were found at the scene. The fire, starting Tuesday night and reigniting Wednesday, posed a serious challenge, with City Power’s Isaac Mangena emphasising their commitment to resolution and power restoration.
