Ekurhuleni Updates Prepaid Power Meters for Uninterrupted Electricity
The City of Ekurhuleni is actively updating its prepaid power meters to ensure a continuous supply of electricity to its customers. The project initially commenced in Edenvale and Nigel at the beginning of the previous month. Notably, 78% of the meters in these areas have already been covered, with the focus shifting to Benoni, Springs, and the surrounding regions later this month.
According to Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, the current electricity meters will cease functioning automatically on November 24, 2024, due to a date rollover issue unless each meter is replaced. Consequently, citizens will no longer be able to load electricity onto these meters after the deadline. The Token Identifier (TID) rollover program, which aims to update the electricity meters, will continue until November 24, 2024.

During the first purchase of electricity after the system settings, clients will receive a receipt with three tokens. These tokens must be entered in the specified order indicated on the receipt, and the update process takes approximately two minutes.
The project will progress to the following areas between August and October:
August 2023: Boksburg and Alberton
September 2023: Kempton Park and Thembisa
October 2023: Brakpan and Germiston
