City Calms Concerns with Tree Removal Along Braam Spruit

Witnessing tree removal along the Braamfontein Spruit may raise concerns for tree enthusiasts in the Parkhurst area and surroundings. However, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) assures residents that this tree removal initiative is essential for the community’s safety and protecting critical infrastructure as reported by Joburg Newsroom.

On October 10, 2023, JCPZ removed approximately 312 trees along the Delta-Orlando 88kV power servitude. Noeleen Mattera, the Media Relations Officer for JCPZ, emphasises that they do not advocate for tree removal as strict open space bylaws safeguard trees. Nevertheless, this initiative is necessary.

These tall trees, ranging from 10 to 15 meters in height, are encroaching upon the 88 kV overhead powerlines, leading to frequent power outages. The risk extends beyond mere inconvenience; it includes potential damage to City Power’s infrastructure, substation, transformer, and private properties.

City Power’s decision to isolate the area underscores the urgency of this operation. Furthermore, these trees have become a source of earthing for the powerlines. Failure to remove them could result in the power supply grounding, potentially causing fires, recurrent power outages, and even fatalities.

While City Parks and Zoos acknowledge the environmental significance and aesthetic appeal of trees in the city, they emphasise the need to balance ecological concerns with public safety and infrastructure integrity.

This tree removal project will unfold in three phases, spanning an estimated three to five weeks, contingent on weather conditions that may affect the timeline.

Johannesburg, being one of the most densely populated cities, relies on native trees to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Trees play a vital role in absorbing air pollutants and providing clean oxygen to the community.
