ANC Gauteng to Address Chaotic Ekurhuleni Regional Conference
Following a high court judgment regarding the chaotic Ekurhuleni regional conference, the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng will convene again on Tuesday after an urgent provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting held on Monday night.
Eyewitness News reports that Judge Denise Fisher ruled that the May 2022 conference, marred by violence and all its decisions, resolutions, and election results, must be set aside. This ruling came after eight applicants took the ANC to court over 14 quarantined votes.
In her 55-page verdict, Fisher questioned the roles played by current Gauteng provincial secretary TK Nciza and the ANC’s first deputy secretary general, Nomvula Mokonyane, in the processes leading up to, during, and after the regional conference. The judgment highlighted the ANC’s poor response to allegations of process manipulation and described it as a series of own goals on the part of the party.

Fisher specifically criticised the ANC’s handling of its verification processes, the response of the party’s national executive committee to complaints from the four branches, and the 70% threshold rule used to determine if a conference can proceed. She also criticised Nciza, who was then the regional secretary and allegedly focused on paving the way for his election as provincial secretary.
Nciza expressed concerns about the potential consequences of the judgment for the ANC as a political party, stressing the need to carefully study the implications and ensure they align with the ANC constitution.
Eyewitness News has learned that the regional executive in Ekurhuleni is likely to be converted into a task team, and the party will seek an appeal after obtaining a legal opinion.
