Chad Markgraaf's 100-Day Marathon Journey: Running to Battle Cancer

Chad Markgraaf, a 20-year-old student from Alberton, embarked on a truly inspiring journey – running 100 marathons in 100 days. Starting this incredible feat on July 1 and determined to continue until October 8, he sets out to run a 42km marathon daily.

The Alberton Record caught up with Chad on July 25, witnessing his completion of the 25th day of this 100-day challenge. By the end, he would have covered an astonishing 4,200 kilometres in 100 consecutive days.

His mission goes beyond personal achievement; Chad aims to raise funds for individuals battling cancer, particularly those facing financial hardships due to medical expenses.

Running is more than a hobby for Chad; it’s a form of expression of his determination to make a difference. After facing unexpected challenges that tested both him and his family, including failing a degree module last year, he realised 2023 would afford him plenty of free time, which he wanted to utilise to bring positive change.

The idea of running 100 marathons in 100 days came to him during one of his long runs in January, and since then, it has become an obsession. His experience with his mother’s courageous battle against skin cancer and the financial struggles that accompanied it strengthened his resolve to help others facing similar battles.

Chad dedicates each set of 100 marathons to someone in need. He chose Kyle Dally, a young man fighting stage four skin cancer, who faces the staggering monthly cost of R50,000 for life-saving medications. With each stride, Chad raises awareness for Kyle’s plight and gathers funds to give him a fighting chance.

The journey is not without its challenges. Despite valiant efforts to secure sponsors and funding, Chad faces obstacles. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred, running solo six days a week, and on Saturdays, he gathers a passionate group of runners who provide invaluable support both in spirit and contributions.

Reflecting on his overcome hurdles, Chad acknowledges that each day presents new challenges. Despite the initial struggle, he finds it becoming easier each day, believing that a higher power plays a role in his journey.

Chad documents every step on social media, inviting others to join him in bringing hope to cancer patients. His Instagram (@thefaithfulchad) and Facebook (Chad Markgraaf) pages have become rallying points for those who wish to support his noble cause. Through his dedication, compassion, and the power of a united community, Chad Markgraaf demonstrates that even a single person can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
