The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is taking swift action to investigate the cause of a steel footbridge collapse that injured two individuals. According to SowetanLIVE, a technical team and the Joint Operations Committee were en route immediately after the incident.

Prasa spokesperson Andiswa Makanda said the collapsed bridge was between the Jeppestown and George Goch train stations on the Germiston to Johannesburg line. Emergency personnel promptly transported the injured pedestrians to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Makanda explained that the collapse occurred during test train runs on the recently recovered Germiston to Johannesburg line. This line is part of the 16 corridors designated for rebuilding and recovery in the current financial year.

“We would like to commend the swift responses from our security team, JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department), and emergency services,” added Makanda. The investigative team from Prasa, including engineers and senior management, is currently on-site to assess the extent of the damage.
