Richard Walls, Head of Fire Engineering at Stellenbosch University, emphasised the importance of regular gas safety checks. He expressed concern that after the incident, companies with gas lines in the area might have shut everything down or removed potential sources of leaks, making it challenging to identify the original problem. To ensure safety, ongoing gas measurements are vital in the extensive network beneath the streets of Joburg. Regular gas detections in various spaces throughout the city are essential for maintaining a safe environment and preventing similar incidents in the future.
