BREE STREET ROCKED: Gas Explosion Unleashes Chaos in Johannesburg CBD
A gas explosion in the underground has caused significant upheaval on Bree Street in the heart of Johannesburg. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department is urging the public to avoid the area.
The explosion took place between Bree and Simmonds streets in the city centre, causing considerable chaos this Wednesday evening. Eyewitnesses have been sharing videos and photos on social media showing the scale of the damage. The pictures depict deep cracks in the road, damaged vehicles, and a line-up of stationary minibus taxis.

Emergency services are currently on their way to assess the situation. As per the latest update from JMPD, no fatalities have been reported yet.
The explosion has caused a standstill of traffic in Johannesburg’s central business district, with law enforcement trying to manage the situation. Reports indicate that some taxis have been overturned, and Bree Street has been closed off to traffic. The area is still heavy with the smell of gas, and police are looking for any injured individuals.
Traffic is being redirected, with taxis being guided to an alternate street. The public is advised to stay away from the area until further notice.
