A 44-year-old Brazilian woman was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday afternoon on suspicion of drug trafficking, marking the second such arrest at the airport this week.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the woman had arrived from São Paulo at 1 PM. Acting on SAPS intelligence, officers intercepted her and discovered cocaine concealed around her upper body.

She has been charged with drug trafficking and is set to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.

“This is the second [alleged] drug trafficker to be arrested with cocaine wrapped around their upper torso this week,” said Mathe. “On Sunday, another Brazilian male was apprehended with R1.8 million worth of cocaine.”

The airport police are intensifying efforts to combat drug smuggling at one of South Africa’s busiest entry points.

“This sends a clear message that South Africa is not a playground for drug peddlers,” Mathe added, reaffirming the commitment to clamp down on narcotics trafficking.
