Unathi Mgolombane, a resident of Bramley and a fashionable upcycler, took a break from her creative endeavors in Sandton to share her journey of turning trash into fashionable art.

At the age of 31, Mgolombane relocated to Sandton from the Eastern Cape in 2001 when her mother started working in Wynberg. Reflecting on her passion for art, Mgolombane expressed how creativity has always been a significant part of her life, dating back to her childhood.

She mentioned, “Art has been a fundamental part of me since my early days. I remember making dresses for my dolls using old clothes that I repurposed. This early interest grew into a passion for creating wearable art for myself and others.”

While recycling is commonly understood, Mgolombane emphasized the concept of upcycling, which involves breathing new life into discarded items by giving them a fresh purpose. She shared her habit of collecting interesting items during her walks in Bramley and neighboring areas, turning these found treasures into unique creations.

Mgolombane’s breakthrough in the art and fashion industry came when she was selected as one of the winners of the Woolworths Youth Makers competition in 2024. This opportunity not only provided her with exposure but also led to collaborations and engagements across various cities in South Africa.

Looking ahead, Mgolombane plans to establish a studio at her residence in Bramley and participate in more market opportunities within Sandton. She credited her time at the iMbali Visual Literacy Project in Newtown for equipping her with essential skills in crafts and design, enabling her to pursue her creative endeavors without relying heavily on machinery.
