Boundary Road Endures Six Water Pipe Bursts in Just Two Months
The condition of Boundary Road in Blairgowrie and Robindale has become increasingly concerning due to the ongoing water pipe bursts. In the last two months alone, a 1km stretch of this road has endured six pipe bursts. These bursts have caused substantial damage to the road and pavements, leaving the area resembling a war zone.

The bursts are attributed to ageing asbestos cement pipes that repeatedly break at different points along the road. Johannesburg Water has been involved in repairing the pipes, but the road’s reinstatement remains pending. Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk expressed her frustration, highlighting the inconvenience caused by the delays.
Johannesburg Water informed Van Dyk that they are waiting for the ground to settle and the water to dry before proceeding with the road reinstatement. However, this process has taken longer than expected, raising concerns about pedestrian safety and potential accidents on the busy road.
Another significant reinstatement is needed on nearby Bram Fischer Drive, where a burst water pipe left residents without water for a week. This heavily travelled road has accumulated standing water since the burst on August 24, with sewage contamination adding to the issue.
Despite the pressing need for attention to these reinstatement projects, Johannesburg Water has not yet taken action, citing ongoing water accumulation as a hindrance. Questions were directed to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala on September 19, seeking clarification on the repeated pipe bursts on Boundary Road, the timeline for reinstatement, and preventative measures. Shabalala responded the next day, indicating that she would forward the inquiry to the relevant depot for prioritisation but cautioned that response times might be delayed.
