‘Big brother’ thwarts attempted cable theft at Koedoeberg substation
Theft Attempt at Koedoeberg Substation Thwarted by Swift Response
Security stakeholders and a ward councillor successfully prevented a cable theft incident at the Koedoeberg substation in Joburg on October 10. The Faerie Glen Operations team, which includes SAPS Garsfontein, Platinum Risk Solutions, Bull security, Brinant, Fidelity ADT, and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), swiftly reacted to suspicious activity at the substation captured on video footage.
Capturing the Suspicious Activity
- The camera installed at the substation detected suspicious movement, triggering a rapid response from security personnel.
Arrest and Charges
- Platinum Risk Solutions security officers, supported by Bull security, managed to arrest one suspect and handed him over to the Garsfontein police.
- The suspect, apprehended at 00:00 on Thursday, faces charges of tampering with essential infrastructure.
- Two additional suspects escaped, allegedly in the process of attempting to cut cables supplying electricity to Olympus and Equestria, a move that could have resulted in a power outage.
Collaborative Efforts and Response
- Tshwane Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo highlighted that ward councillors promptly informed Tshwane’s Pretorius Park Electricity Depot about the attempted crime at the Koedoeberg Substation.
- Fortunately, there was no damage to the substation, thanks to the quick intervention of private security companies in the area.
- Mashigo emphasized the continuous patrols conducted by private security companies as a preventive measure against further incidents.
