Bester dancing in his cell

The saga surrounding convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester’s escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre prison deepens as a video of his luxurious lifestyle while in jail has gone viral on social media. According to African Insider, the footage shows Bester dancing in his cell while wearing regular clothes, allegedly delivered to him by his lover Dr Nandipha Magudumana on most days. The video caption claims that Bester also had his own sheets. Pictures of Bester dressed in various civilian outfits have also made their way online, sparking concerns about his confinement conditions.

Reports suggest that Bester frequently left the prison to meet with Magudumana, who he reportedly checked into a five-star hotel with on two occasions in Bloemfontein, according to an invoice from the Tredenham Boutique Hotel. The hotel’s owner stated that the couple stayed for an additional night beyond what the invoice indicated. Bester is said to have enjoyed several “getaways” from prison before his escape.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has announced that the police expect more arrests concerning Bester’s escape. He stated that the police would investigate every aspect of the case and bring those implicated to justice. Cele emphasized that the investigation would be extensive and no stone would be left unturned. So far, four people, including Magudumana, her father Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, former G4S employee Sehone Matsoara, and CCTV technician Teboho Lipholo, have been arrested for aiding Bester’s escape. Sekeleni has been granted R10 000 bail, with several conditions, including weekly reports to the Port Edward police station and no contact with the state’s witnesses.
