Three police officers from the Benoni Flying Squad, Gauteng, have been arrested on charges of kidnapping and extortion. Stella Mabida (38), Rodney Ramoraka (43), and Vusi Nhlapho (36) were taken into custody by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) after allegedly demanding money from a salon owner under false pretenses.

Alleged Extortion Incident

The incident took place on November 24, 2024, at the Norkem Park Mall in Kempton Park. The officers approached salon owner Nikiwe Dube, questioning her about her business papers and ID. Despite Dube providing her documentation, the officers reportedly insisted on visiting her home for a search.

At her residence, the officers allegedly demanded access to a safe and coerced her into paying them R42,000, though they initially asked for R60,000. Dube later reported the incident to IPID, leading to the officers’ arrest on December 2, 2024.

The accused officers appeared at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They were granted bail of R2,000 each, with the case postponed to January 30, 2025, for further investigations.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed the arrests, emphasizing that the allegations are being treated with utmost seriousness. The case underscores the importance of accountability within the police force.

This investigation is a reminder of the crucial role oversight bodies like IPID play in addressing misconduct and safeguarding public trust in law enforcement.
