Babita Deokaran murder trial continues

Babita Deokaran’s murder case takes a step forward as six men accused of her killing will appear in the High Court in Johannesburg today. Per SABC News, the case was postponed due to an advocate’s illness.

Deokaran, a corruption whistleblower, was fatally shot outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021. A senior finance official in the Gauteng Health Department, she had exposed suspicious payments totalling R850 million to various companies.

The accused face various charges, including:

  • murder, 
  • attempted murder, 
  • conspiracy, and 
  • possession of unlicensed firearms.

Two years after her tragic death, Deokaran’s family and civil rights group OUTA still advocate for justice.
