André de Ruyter must be held accountable

Amid growing scrutiny, the head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), Andy Mothibi, said former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter must be held accountable for his actions. Mothibi asserted that de Ruyter engaged in maladministration by approving a covert investigation into Eskom’s operations without proper authority, even if his intentions were good.

This development comes as Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) investigates corruption allegations made by de Ruyter during a television interview and in a subsequent book.

Mothibi emphasized that de Ruyter’s actions were inconsistent with his role and stressed the need to consider holding him accountable. The SIU found that the secret investigation into Eskom was contracted without board approval, highlighting a governance issue and potential maladministration.

The SIU is now contemplating formal contact with de Ruyter at Yale University in the United States as part of the accountability process. The investigation also implicates politicians in Eskom corruption, but further assessment is needed to gauge the legal implications of these allegations.

Despite the unauthorized nature of the report, Mothibi stressed its value in identifying matters that warrant investigation.
