The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has distanced itself from the ongoing sit-in at the Gold One Modder East mine, according to Ziyaad Hassam, the mine’s head of legal. According to Eyewitness News, approximately 500 workers are currently stuck underground in what appears to be another hostage situation at the mine in Springs.

This incident follows a similar event in October, lasting three days. Among the 447 workers underground are 70 members of management and contractors. Hassam mentioned that two workers managed to escape earlier on Friday. But those responsible for the situation are unknown.

People wearing balaclavas are blocking entrances. Various parties are working to resolve the situation.
