Amazon’s statement emphasised the role of independent sellers in its global ecosystem, with over 60% of its sales originating from small and medium-sized businesses. These sellers not only offer a diverse range of products but also maintain competitive prices and provide exceptional convenience to consumers. Starting October 17, 2023, independent sellers based in South Africa will be able to register their businesses on sell.amazon.com/south-africa, setting the stage for the forthcoming launch of Amazon.co.za.
Robert Koen, the general manager of Amazon’s Sub-Saharan Africa region, expressed the company’s anticipation of the launch, underlining the potential it holds for local sellers, brand owners, and entrepreneurs. Amazon aims to deliver substantial value and a seamless shopping experience to customers throughout South Africa.
Amazon’s statement also spotlighted a Johannesburg-based business, African Mamas Crafts, which supports home-based crafters in rural areas. The business recognised the potential for growth within Amazon’s vast online marketplace and is eager to leverage the tools and expertise offered by Amazon to enhance its e-commerce operations.
Nomaswazi Tinus, the founder and director of African Mamas Crafts, conveyed the business’s enthusiasm for the collaboration and their eagerness to embark on this journey of growth with Amazon.
Additionally, Reader’s Warehouse, founded by two brothers passionate about books and reading, expressed their excitement about partnering with Amazon. The collaboration opens up an incredible opportunity to expand their e-commerce operations and tap into a broader customer base in South Africa, as described by Sean Bulpin, director at Reader’s Warehouse.
In South Africa, Amazon will face competition in the e-commerce sector from established platforms such as Takealot and Loot.co.za. The introduction of Amazon.co.za promises to add a new dimension to the country’s e-commerce landscape, offering more choices to consumers and exciting prospects for local small businesses.
