Gauteng Police Investigate Alleged Assault Involving Senior Officer

On September 4, an incident occurred in Ext 10 in Westonaria, where West Rand District Police Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana was allegedly involved in an altercation with a civilian guarding a gated community. It is reported that the community member stationed at the gate prevented Kekana from entering, leading to a confrontation between the two.

The incident, captured on camera, shows Kekana and his associate allegedly assaulting the man while attempting to arrest him. A person recording the video can be heard questioning the officers’ actions, stating that there seems to be no valid reason for the arrest other than the civilian stopping Kekana from entering.

The incident has raised concerns about the alleged abuse of power by the police officers involved. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi acknowledged the incident, explaining that Kekana was visiting a resident in an estate when he was denied entrance through a makeshift boom gate. An altercation ensued between Kekana and the security officer stationed at the gate.

Nevhuhulwi stated that the security officer was uncooperative and not a qualified security officer. Two individuals, including the security officer, were subsequently arrested on charges of attempted robbery, assault, malicious damage to property, and crimen injuria. They appeared in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court on September 6 and were released on bail, with the case remanded to September 29.
