These awards, organised by KZN Namuhla Community Newspaper, aim to celebrate up-and-coming music talents during Heritage Month in the province and beyond. The event, which took place on September 24 at Durban’s Bat Centre, featured over 45 participating artists, including non-profit organisations, individuals with disabilities, and radio stations. Nominees competed through SMS votes, with 350 guests in attendance.
This year’s awards also welcomed artists from other provinces like Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. Notable winners included Pat Nkonyeni for Best Female Solo Artist, Thambo Lentliziyo for Best Poet, Siyanda Magqabi for Gospel Song of the Year (shared with Philisiwe Madikizela), and Busiswa for Gospel Best Newcomer.
One of the standout artists of the evening was the young Maskandi talent from KwaZulu-Natal, Sphesihle Mthembu, known as Ibhunu Leplazi, who secured four awards in categories like Afro Pop Best Newcomer, Best Maskandi Group, Best Male Maskandi Musician, and Best Song of the Year.
