The Alberton Lions Club Fundraises for Childhood Cancer Awareness
The Alberton Lions Club recently collaborated with Lions Clubs nationwide to support children fighting cancer.
Participating in the National Cupcake Day, a fundraising event dedicated to raising awareness for childhood cancer, the Alberton Lions Club joined forces with 73 other malls across South Africa, including Lemon Tree Shopping Centre, The Glen, Mall of the South, and Bracken City Centre.
During the event, Alberton Lions Club members sold 830 cupcakes, ultimately raising R12,000 for the cause. The cupcakes, adorned with toppings from JC Bakery and Caketastic Creations, were priced between R10 and R20 each.
Courtney Lewarne, a representative from the Alberton Lions Club, expressed gratitude for the support received from club members, the community, and various organizations. Lewarne highlighted the generosity of many donors who contributed to the cause without taking any cupcakes.
The national initiative was a success, raising a total of R2.3 million, showcasing the impact of community-driven efforts in supporting those in need.
Furthermore, the Alberton Lions Club extended their outreach by donating the remaining cupcakes to Sassa pensioners in the south of Johannesburg and three crèches that the club supports.
Lewarne noted that the club’s involvement in the Cupcakes of Hope project dates back to 2018, with Lion Sandra Human accepting Cupcakes for Cancer as a project during a Lions International Leadership course in February 2023. After a pause due to Covid-19, Alberton Lions re-engaged with and pledged continuous support for this important cause.
