Alberton Boulevard: Soon to be history
The Alberton Boulevard, once a bustling hub, has now turned into a concerning crime hotspot, plagued by homelessness and decay, leaving both business owners and residents in dire need of change.
In the past three months alone, four businesses have fallen victim to robberies, leaving the community feeling helpless and distressed. Clr Tim Denny highlighted that the malfunctioning streetlights have shrouded the area in darkness, providing the perfect cover for criminals to operate.
The presence of homeless individuals, drug users, and lawbreakers has grown significantly, driving away potential customers and investors, painting a grim picture for the area’s future.
Despite the efforts of the EMPD to clean up the vicinity, the homeless population swiftly returned, leading to mounting frustration among business proprietors. Toyota Alberton has already relocated, and more businesses are teetering on the brink of departure.
Local residents are deeply concerned that Alberton CBD may follow the path of Johannesburg Central, known for its alarming crime rates.
“The situation is dire. Homeless individuals have taken over the area, leaving behind a trail of unsanitary conditions that drive away potential customers,” lamented an anonymous local business owner.
Denny is demanding transparency regarding the mayor’s pledge of a R200 billion investment, particularly questioning the allocation towards rejuvenating the Alberton CBD.
“The community is in urgent need of tangible actions, not just promises. Given that Alberton Boulevard serves as a primary entry point, its neglect could deter tourists and visitors,” he emphasized.
Originally designed in the late 1980s to be a pedestrian-friendly zone, Alberton Boulevard now stands as a stark contrast to its former self, overshadowed by criminal activities and deterioration.
“The City of Ekurhuleni’s apparent inaction has left the community feeling neglected and abandoned,” remarked Denny.
Alberton Record reached out to Zweli Dlamini, the spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, on September 17 for comment.
In response, Dlamini stated, “We are fully cognizant of the prevalent high crime rates in Alberton CBD, and the matter is receiving the utmost attention. The city has deployed the EMPD to patrol the Alberton CBD.”
Dlamini assured Alberton Record that he would provide further information on the municipality’s proposed concrete solutions to rejuvenate Alberton Boulevard.
