The WHATS program, a youth development initiative, seeks to empower learners, encouraging them to engage in activities that uncover hidden potentials and overcome obstacles. According to Director Sifisokuhle Mkwanazi, the program addresses the challenge where 23% of matric certificate holders lack the necessary job experience, contributing significantly to township youth unemployment.
Mkwanazi highlighted the ongoing struggle for sustainable career development and access to quality education in township communities. The WHATS program aims to break these barriers, providing opportunities for exploration and growth.
The initiative has already made strides in enhancing social cohesion, increasing community engagement, and developing events that empower young people in Cosmo City. By fostering local economic development and entrepreneurial activities in arts, sports, and career development, the program strives to create opportunities within townships.
During the event, health representatives and JMPD officers conducted safety lessons, and Environment Buddie, in collaboration with the National Greening Champion from the Green Development Foundation, led a tree-planting initiative.
The learners seized the platform to showcase their talents, entertaining teachers and guests through music and dance. The event was deemed interesting and enjoyable, with plans to introduce the WHATS program to other schools gaining momentum.
“We had an interesting and fun day at the school, and we look forward to introducing the WHATS programme in other schools as it gains momentum.”
