AfriForum youth beautifies Battle of Bronkhorstspruit monuments

The AfriForum Bronkhorstspruit branch’s youth wing recently undertook repairs on the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit monuments. These historical landmarks, located on the R25, commemorate both the Boers and British soldiers who perished during the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit on December 20, 1880.

For years, the monuments had been neglected and fallen into disrepair. Recognizing the importance of preserving these symbols of history, the organisation embarked on a project to clean and restore them, involving the local youth in the process.

This year, efforts were focused on repainting the British monument, removing overgrown weeds around both monuments, and leveling the sites with five tons of gravel. Additionally, the plaques, previously damaged and illegible, were refurbished to ensure that visitors can continue to engage with the historical significance of the area.

Following the completion of the restoration work, two youth members laid wreaths at the monuments, generously donated by the local FAK Culture Network.

Magda Lewis, chairperson of the Bronkhorstspruit branch, emphasized the significance of these monuments to the local community, stating that they hold a special place in the town’s heritage. She expressed appreciation for the youth’s active involvement in preserving their heritage.

Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum district co-ordinator for Greater Pretoria North, highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort by AfriForum in Bronkhorstspruit to cultivate a sense of pride among all community members for their town.
