AfriForum’s Alberton helps to contain veld fire
AfriForum’s Neighbourhood Watch Assists in Controlling Veld Fire Threatening Business in Alberton
AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch in Alberton came to the assistance of owners of a business threatened by a veld fire. Owners noticed fire around 19:00 in the Newmarket area.
The neighbourhood watch was alerted at around 19:15 via WhatsApp message about a fire at a property. They rushed to the location where CPS Security, the original poster of the incident, was already on the scene.
At the scene, AfriForum’s Alberton branch found owners of the property trying to put the fire out using a garden hosepipe.
“In co-operation with the owner of the property, the AfriForum neighbourhood watch used its mobile fire engine to finally control the fire. This equipment was later used to cool all the hot embers around the property so that the fire would not flare up again,” said Donovan Scorgie, leader of the Alberton branch neighbourhood watch.
Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s district co-ordinator for the East Rand, also commented on the incident, saying: “The neighbourhood watch wants to help ensure that Alberton’s residents mobilise themselves to become actively involved in the safety of the community. A community that comes together to face common challenges is a community that is prepared for success.”
Albertonians are called on to active citizenship by participating in AfriForum’s Alberton branch and to get involved with its neighbourhood watch which could make a real difference in the area.
