A man has been arrested for attempting to smuggle a VW T-Cross, which was stolen during an armed robbery in Johannesburg, into eSwatini

Police have arrested a man in Mpumalanga for attempting to smuggle a stolen Volkswagen T-Cross SUV out of South Africa and into eSwatini via the Oshoek port of entry. Thulane Mavundla, 33, was caught by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from border policing, carrying out routine vehicle inspections as reported by IOL.

During their search, they found the vehicle driven by Mavundla and discovered it had been stolen during an armed robbery in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on 21 March 2023.

Mavundla was immediately taken into custody and charged with possessing a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

The case has been postponed to 30 March 2023 for a formal bail application.

The suspect may face additional charges related to the armed robbery incident.

Acting provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers for their commitment and vigilance at the border.
