A farmer was killed in the Grootvlei Balfour district on July 30. Theo Bekker, a well-known farmer, and his wife, Marlinda, were attacked on their farm between 07:00 and 09:00. The assailants pounced while Bekker was outside and forced him back into the house. Inside, they assaulted him and fatally wounded him with a heavy object. Marlinda was also assaulted and sustained severe injuries during the attack. The intruders ransacked the home, fleeing with firearms and money in one of the couple’s vehicles.

Marlinda managed to seek help from a neighbour, prompting the relevant law enforcement agencies to respond swiftly. They took her to the hospital for medical treatment. Law enforcement initiated a search for the perpetrators. The criminals were later involved in an accident in the Villiers area while attempting to escape. Despite their efforts to evade capture, the authorities tracked them down.

Law enforcement recovered the stolen firearms at the accident scene and arrested four suspects within two hours of the attack. Two of the suspects were workers on the farm. All are between 16 and 19 years old.

The provincial commissioner for the Mpumalanga SAPS, Lieutenant-General Semakeleng Daphney Manamela, strongly condemned the attack and emphasised the importance of community cooperation in apprehending the suspects.
