A suspect linked to the brutal torture incidents at Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has been arrested in Yeoville, Johannesburg. The breakthrough was hailed by Gauteng provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, as authorities continue their hunt for other perpetrators.

The 41-year-old Congolese national was apprehended by alert Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers during routine patrols on Thursday. Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that the officers recognized the suspect from widely circulated social media videos showing disturbing acts of violence at the nightclub.

After verifying his identity, the officers placed him under arrest and detained him at a local police station. The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) specialised Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit was immediately informed.

The arrested man has been charged with compelled rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and crimen injuria. He is being linked to two cases registered at Brooklyn Police Station. His court appearance is scheduled for Monday, February 24, 2025.

Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the Zanzou nightclub torture scandal.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni commended the JMPD officers for their vigilance and quick response, stating that the arrest reflects the effectiveness of joint law enforcement efforts in Gauteng.

“This is a true reflection of law enforcement agencies in Gauteng working together to realise the Police Ministerial Cooperation Agreement, which aims to enhance collaboration and coordination among all stakeholders in the region to address safety and security concerns effectively,” Mthombeni said.

Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the case to come forward as the search for additional suspects intensifies.
