Weeks after shocking videos emerged showing men being tortured at the Pretoria nightclub Zanzou, one of the club’s directors has publicly addressed the controversy for the first time. Entrepreneur Neo Moela, accompanied by prominent attorney Zola Majavu, spoke at a media briefing on Tuesday to clarify his role—or lack thereof—in the disturbing events that have sparked national outrage.

Majavu firmly stated that Moela was unaware of the horrific acts that took place at the club until they were brought to light. “He wishes to express that there is no justification for these despicable acts,” Majavu said. “He apologizes to those whose human rights were trampled on.”

The whistleblower, known as Pablo, implicated Moela in the alleged torture through videos exposing the nightclub’s dark underbelly. However, Majavu insisted that his client was not attempting to evade responsibility and was fully prepared to cooperate with authorities. “You are not dealing with someone who refuses to take accountability. If he becomes a person of interest, he will cooperate. He is not above the law,” he said.

While Majavu acknowledged the complexity of determining criminal and civil liability in such cases, he dismissed claims that the media briefing was an attempt to manage public relations. He also urged the public and media to respect the victims, emphasizing the severity of the human rights violations involved.

“If Moela were to become a suspect, I would take him by the scruff of his neck and hand him over to the police myself,” Majavu asserted. “However, someone has already been arrested in connection with the case, and that has nothing to do with him.”

The arrested individual, a 41-year-old man whose name is being withheld, is facing eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Majavu concluded by emphasizing that Moela remains committed to staying in South Africa and assisting in the investigation. “He is not fleeing the country. He is a young entrepreneur with a bright future, and he felt it was important to come forward as a responsible South African.”
