The woman who allegedly threw her dog from the third-floor balcony at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg has passed away. The incident, which occurred in November 2024, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.

The tragic event took place on November 6, 2024, when the woman, a French national traveling from France to Brazil, was seen at the airport with her small black dog. Video footage from Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) captured her walking through the Atrium, with the dog running freely by her side. Shockingly, she then picked up the dog and threw it over the third-floor balcony, causing serious injuries to the animal. The dog had to be euthanized as a result of its injuries.

Jacques Peacock, spokesperson for the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA), confirmed that the woman died on November 25, 2024, at Thembisa Hospital after reportedly suffering from mental illness. A case of animal cruelty was opened, and South African Police Services (SAPS) initiated an investigation into the incident. The woman’s actions had raised significant concern for both animal rights advocates and the public.

The NSPCA noted that the woman had purchased a ticket for her dog as an “extra passenger” before boarding her flight. However, she was unable to board her connecting flight to Brazil following the incident. Police later confirmed that she was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. The investigation into the dog’s abuse continues as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
